Buy Mexican pesos before you cross the border
Buy Mexican pesos online from US First Exchange and arrive in Mexico with cash ready to spend. We are a Los Angeles currency exchange registered with FinCEN, part of the US Treasury, as a Money Services Business. Choose your amount in the order form on this page and see your full price before you pay.
Ordering ahead usually costs less than changing money at the airport or a border exchange booth. Read alternatives to airport money exchange to compare.
Why pay in pesos, not dollars
Many places in Cancún, Los Cabos and other tourist areas accept US dollars, but they usually set their own exchange rate, and it rarely favors you. Paying in pesos means you pay the local price.
Pesos are essential away from the resorts: taxis, street food, markets, tolls on Mexican highways, small towns and tips all run on cash. Watch out for one thing: prices in Mexico are also written with the $ sign, so check whether a price means pesos or dollars.
Mexican peso banknotes at a glance
Mexican banknotes are issued by the Banco de México. We source pesos as orders come in, so the exact mix of notes depends on availability at the time of your order.
| Note | Typical use |
|---|---|
| $20 and $50 MXN | Tips, street food, tolls, small purchases |
| $100 MXN | Taxis, meals, everyday spending |
| $200 MXN | Restaurants, shopping |
| $500 and $1,000 MXN | Large payments; small vendors often cannot give change |
