Norway is almost cashless

Norway is one of the most cashless countries in the world. Cards and contactless payments work in shops, restaurants, taxis, ferries and on public transport, even in small towns.

That means you need less cash here than almost anywhere else. A small amount of kroner is still useful as a backup if a card is declined, for honesty-box farm stands and fjord-side kiosks, and in remote areas with patchy signal. Norway also does not use the euro, so kroner are the only cash you can spend.

Norwegian krone banknotes at a glance

Norwegian banknotes are issued by Norges Bank. The current series, issued between 2017 and 2019, has an ocean theme. We source kroner as orders come in, so the exact mix of notes depends on availability at the time of your order.

NoteTypical use
50 krCoffee, snacks, honesty boxes
100 krMeals, small purchases
200 krEveryday spending
500 and 1,000 krLarger purchases; rarely needed
