Hawker centres still like cash
Singapore is highly cashless. Cards and contactless payments work in hotels, malls, taxis and on the MRT, where you can tap a contactless bank card at the gate.
The big exception is food. Many stalls at hawker centres such as Maxwell, Lau Pa Sat and Chinatown Complex take local QR payments that do not always work with foreign cards, so a few small notes make a quick lunch much easier. Tipping is not expected; many restaurants add a service charge instead.
