Post-1946 Japanese Banknote Series

Japanese Yen notes are issued by the Bank of Japan and printed by Japan’s National Printing Bureau, while Yen coins are produced by the Japan Mint. The most recent redesigned banknote series entered circulation on July 3, 2024, introducing advanced anti-counterfeit features: novel holographic/3D portrait elements, color-shifting inks, security threads, watermarks, and universal-design improvements, to strengthen authentication and reduce fraud.

Historically issued post-1946 banknotes over ¥1 remain legal tender in Japan unless a formal withdrawal measure is enacted, and older series  Yen notes can generally be exchanged at the Bank of Japan and local bank branches if needed.

Why Is the Japanese Yen So Weak?
The yen’s strength fluctuates under Japan’s floating exchange rate system. Factors such as interest rates, inflation, trade balances, and the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy all influence its value.

The BOJ’s long-standing low-interest policy makes the yen less attractive to investors, which has contributed to its weaker position globally. However, market shifts or policy changes can quickly alter its trajectory.
