Indonesian Rupiah Banknote Series

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) banknotes are issued and printed by Bank Indonesia, the nation’s central bank, while coins are minted by Perum Peruri, the state-owned mint. The current Rupiah banknote series features advanced security features such as watermarks, color-shifting ink, security threads, and embossed printing to prevent counterfeiting and ensure authenticity.

Older Rupiah series that have been withdrawn from circulation are no longer legal tender and cannot be exchanged at Bank Indonesia, as the official redemption period ended in 2018. These measures help maintain the integrity, security, and trust of Indonesian currency. Precious-metal Indonesian coins are limited-edition collector's items, not standard currency, with examples including 100,000- and 5,000-rupiah gold and silver proof coins.

Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) FAQs

Anything else on your mind about Indonesian currency? Get informed before buying or selling Indonesian money — and travel with confidence knowing you’re getting the best exchange rates.

What Money Is Used in Indonesia?
The official money used in Indonesia is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), symbolized as Rp. It is a fiat currency issued and regulated by Bank Indonesia, the country’s central bank.

Rupiah banknotes feature prominent national heroes, cultural landmarks, and strong anti-counterfeiting elements, while coins are commonly used for everyday purchases such as public transport, snacks, and small services.
Where Should I Get Indonesian Rupiah?
The best way to buy Indonesian Rupiah is through a secure online exchange platform such as US First Exchange. You’ll enjoy competitive exchange rates, transparent fees, and fast home delivery before your trip.

Unlike many U.S. banks, which may require advance orders or offer limited IDR availability, online exchanges are faster, more convenient, and provide much better value. You’ll also avoid poor local rates and high ATM fees at Indonesian exchange booths.
Is It Better to Carry IDR or USD to Bali?
It’s generally better to carry Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) when traveling to Bali, as it’s the only legal tender accepted for local payments, food, and transportation.

While USD may be accepted in some tourist areas, you’ll often get worse rates than if you paid directly in Rupiah. For the best value, exchange your USD to IDR through US First Exchange before traveling. This ensures you avoid ATM surcharges, poor airport exchange rates, and hidden markups.
What Is the Currency in Indonesia?
The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) — symbolized as Rp — is the official currency of Indonesia. It is managed by Bank Indonesia, which oversees monetary policy, inflation, and exchange-rate stability.

The Rupiah operates under a floating exchange rate system, meaning its value adjusts with global market conditions. As one of Southeast Asia’s growing economies, Indonesia’s currency reflects national economic performance, trade activity, and ongoing monetary reforms supporting sustainable development.
